A Curated Introduction to Gameplay

Are you ready to dive right in and experience the magic of Mahjong? This is the class for you!

You’ll leave class feeling ready to attend casual play and open play events in the Mahjong community. Offered as Private and Semi Private classes, there is a seat at the table for everyone!

You’ll learn the following core concepts of Mahjong according to the rules of the National Mah Jongg League (NMJL):

• How to read and understand the NJML official standard card.

• What is standard in a Mahjong setup, how to prepare a table for play through the official NJML deal “The Charleston”

• The ins and outs of the tiles: the different suites, their complimentary dragons, and neutral tiles.

• Gameplay flow, game setup, how to successfully build a hand, and the rules that make up the basic structure of the game.

• The art of building a beautiful Mahjong Table, what to look for and consider when buying products for your own use, and how to curate the perfect Mahjong gathering in your own home.

Taking a Bay State Bam class is an experience in it of itself. In addition to leaving with the knowledge of gameplay and community building, you can expect the following as a part of your class package:

• Your own National Mah Jongg League play card ($15 value)

• Tips and Tricks Table Card to guide your play when you’re seated at the Mahj Table moving forward

• 3-4 Hours of Instruction and Guided Gameplay to help your group get to that first MAHJONG!*

I believe in offering a hands on, attentive teaching style. I do not accept lessons of more than 8 students as a solo instructor. For any group above 8 students, I will coordinate with an additional instructor and/or find table coaches as needed to ensure that each student leaves with a full understanding of the game and the confidence to come back to the table.

*It is my personal philosophy that interrupting gameplay for me to end a session is not conducive to learning! I will not cut your group off mid game should we reach our agreed upon “end time” and will happily stay to finish out the last game as long as it is mutually agreed and desired.

101 Class Pricing

MAHJ 101 Hosted @ Bay State Bam (Semi Private): $65/Person for up to 8 students, $75/Person for each additional student.

MAHJ 101 Hosted by YOU: $80/Person for up to 8 students, $90/Person for each additional student.

Troop Mahjong Membership Add On: For an additional $10/Student, you can join Troop Mahjong Boston/Worcester, and will receive your first merit book and earn merit stickers throughout your lesson.

Tile Trunk Show Add On: Is your group excited and ready to shop? For an additional $5/Student, I will bring along a curated selection of Mahjong Tiles, Mats, Racks and Accessories to share with your group! I will coordinate with he hostess ahead of time to ensure that the options I bring fit the desired price points of the group she is hosting, set up a beautiful display, and talk through different options and companies.

Public MAHJ 101 Classes are offered at least monthly for $75/student and are an alternate option for learning! Check my event page to see when the next Public 101 Class is. The Troop Mahjong Membership add on is not available at these lessons unless otherwise advertised.
